Many geniuses are said to have kept notebooks of one kind and another, but a spiritual notebook is very helpful for all, even though you may not consider yourself a genius. A spiritual notebook, first of all, is meant to contain your intense freedom, your interest in manifold things in life. Leonardo da Vinci once said: “Feathers shall raise men even as they do birds, toward heaven, that is by letters written with their quills.”
So, what is it that should we write in a spiritual notebook anyway?
The answer to the question is simple: you write your interior life-your spiritual journey of the deepest recesses of your soul. Now that is a broad answer; okay so let us see if we can break that down into simple, easy manageable steps. So let us begin with a simple question: who are you?
Now, everyone changes right, including you. This means that writing about who you are can be very tricky. So, how do you know that who you are is still the same the next day right? Okay, to resolve that particular dilemma, identify with how you look at yourself, first. Okay, do you look at “you”, and see first your feelings, or your thoughts, or your body, or something else?
Another way to do this is thinking of your own self as a big orchestra. Now ask yourself the following questions:
• Who is the conductor of the orchestra?
• What are the refrains (or the “chorus”) does the chorus get back to over and over again?
• Who is the composer of your music?
It would seem that these analogies are quite obvious. Another analogy that can help is thinking of your own self as something that can be pushed or pulled. The things that push you are called your drives. The things that pull you are called your desires.
For the first part of your notebook, build a concept or mind map of you, including your background, your talents, your skills and your dreams. Be creative with your spiritual notebook. There are many items you can include or incorporate. The following are some good ideas:
• Personal letters
• Souvenirs
• Important keepsakes
• Favorite items (that can be pasted on a notebook)
Well, the notebook is meant also to include your spirituality. So, why not start writing down your prayers? Continue your inner journey. Record it with enthusiasm.
