We all have a mixture of positive and negative attributes. Success comes to those who dwell upon the positive and make efforts to achieve their goals. What better way is there to bring out the best and positive in others than to encourage them in their efforts?

Most life coaching and business coaching experts tell us that encouragement is an expression of approval and support and it imparts courage to its recipient to go ahead further. It helps people change and provides nourishment for career growth and development.

Encouragement makes people do things they would not have the courage to attempt otherwise. It makes people strive to reach their goals as it shows them that you trust them even more than they do themselves. It is a mandate of trust and confidence. It helps create leaders and strengthen the company culture.

Inspiring, stirring and motivating people with courage and hope, encouragement develops team morale by offering support. It is an effective tool for collaboration and cooperation between people. It builds self-confidence and gives valuable feedback to people on what they are doing well and what needs to be improved. Encouragement helps us reduce mistakes and use our resources effectively.

There is as much grace in accepting encouragement as in giving it, as it benefits both the giver and the receiver. It has a profound positive effect not only on the one who receives it but also on the one who gives it. Accepting encouragement gracefully with happiness confirms to the person giving encouragement that you care for their opinion.

As with everything else, there are disadvantages of encouragement in excess or when it is given for undeserving behaviour, especially in the case of children. They begin to value the work they do, not for its real worth but for the praise it gets from the people who matter. If encouragement is not from the heart but only verbal, it loses its value and the recipient is no longer motivated by it.

Here are a few tips that successful life and business coaches give on using encouragement effectively.

1. Encouragement may be honest and specific to reinforce the positive feelings of being loved and respected and reassurance that one’s actions and behaviour meet the approval of those who matter to us.

2. We can make efforts to look for the good things that people do in their everyday lives rather than their mistakes.

3. When someone has experienced a setback, failure or disappointment, this would be the best time to encourage them.

4. We can show others in our team that we really value and care about them by encouraging them.

5. Encouragement may be given freely and should not take the form of a false praise.

When we make it a habit to observe people and give encouragement where it is deserved in a warm and genuine manner, we will see a change in people and the environment around us. There will be positivity and optimism in people and they will set out to achieve success where they thought it was not possible.

All the best,
