Don’t We All?

I was parked in front of the mall wiping off my car. I had just come from the car wash and was waiting for my wife to get out of work. Coming my way from across the parking lot was what society would
consider a bum. From the looks of him, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no
money.

There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you just don’t want to be bothered. This was one of those “don’t want to be bothered times.”

“I hope he doesn’t ask me for any money,” I thought. He didn’t.

He came and sat on the curb in front of the bus stop but he didn’t look like he could have enough money to even ride the bus. After a few minutes he spoke. “That’s a very pretty car,” he said. He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him. His scraggly blond beard keep more than his face warm.

Author Unknown…

100301_timeIt had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

“Jack, did you hear me?” Read More→

Breakfast At McDonald’s

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Something as simple as breakfast at MaDonald’s can turn into a lesson about unconditional acceptance, love and compassion. This story by an unknown author reminds us to “love people and use things, rather than love things and use people“.
bfastatmcdonaldsI am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. My teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Our last project of the term was called “Smile.” The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake, literally. Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. Read More→

Angel On The Highway

Note from Arlene: Stories are such beautiful ways to inspire and illustrate some of the basic truths of life. Last week, we featured a story called How to Find Happiness (Not) and it was immensely popular. So here’s another, very suitable for this holiday season: it’s one of many that you will be seeing regularly from WisdomalaCarte.

story_20091221I was driving home from a meeting this evening about 5, stuck in traffic on Colorado Blvd., and my car started to choke and sputter and died.

I barely managed to coast, cruising, into a gas station, glad only that I would not be blocking traffic and would have a somewhat warm spot to wait for the tow truck. It wouldn’t even turn over. Before I could make the call, I saw a woman walking out of the “quickie mart” building, and it looked like she slipped on some ice and fell into a gas pump! So I got out to see if she was okay. When I got there, it looked more like she had been overcome by sobs than that she had fallen. She was a young woman who looked really haggard with dark circles under her eyes. She dropped something as I helped her up, Read More→
