Be Thankful! You’ve Already Arrived

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I’ve written about it before, when my mother was going through a difficult transition. This year, I’m taking the opportunity to examine more deeply whether I’m doing what I’ve been put here for, my purpose and my blessing. I’m thankful for the opportunity to step back and reflect. The opportunity to express gratitude changes my entire outlook on life’s happenings and my entire sense of appreciation for who I am.

Yes! Gratitude Helps

In my last article, I wrote about Dr Emmons’ cutting edge research on the nature of gratitude. He defines gratitude as: “A virtue and an emotion – a knowing awareness that we are the recipients of goodness”. His view is that gratitude is the best approach to life. Now let’s continue to Dr Emmons’ next 5 outstanding prescriptions for the basic practice of gratitude.

Use visual reminders. Keep an affirmation on your wall about what you do have so you see it upon rising. Keep another one on your refrigerator so you see it when you make breakfast. This can start you on the right foot and you could help the mood of your family members as they get up. It is not hard to imagine what the mood will be like when the morning commences with complaining and nagging. Even if you are thinking negatively, don’t say it out loud. The word meditation comes from the Latin meditatio, which originally indicated every type of physical or intellectual exercise, then later evolved into the more specific meaning “contemplation.” In this guided meditation, we listen to Deepak Chopra soothing voice, encouraging us to remember all the people and things in our life for which we feel grateful.

To embrace the concept that there is treasure in everything means that we fully trust ourselves to be in the right place at the right time and we accept that we are in charge of our lives. When we embrace that gratitude is part of a natural evolution, then being grateful in all circumstances and to everyone, including ourselves, is easy. Embrace how to show your gratitude to improve your life.
