Inside every desire there is an incredible gift available regardless of whether or not the desire has come to fruition. You can literally travel through your desires and into a beautiful and expansive reality. This reality becomes easily available by letting go of attachment to getting our desires. We may still want what we want! But we are not caught in anxiety or need anymore as we go after our goals. How can we let go of attachment to outcome? We do it by changing our focus and seeing with impeccably clear vision that what we are really looking for is available all the time internally.
Let’s explore this now.
While reading the rest of this article, set your intent to travel down to the core of a desire. Think of one thing, an event or object in your outer reality, that you want. Just choose one right now. Got it? We’ll come back to it in a minute.
Now, take a moment to do nothing. Yes, nothing. Start right where you are. Start by not trying to get anywhere, acquire, or change anything. If you are thinking of your one want, that is fine. If you are in a bad mood, that is okay. If your mind is racing, let it race. If your shoulders are tense, let them be tense. If you’re thinking “Why the heck am I reading this guy’s article?” let THAT thought be there. Connect with yourself and whatever is occurring. Can you let go of seeking for one minute? Stay put. Just breathe. Just be.
On an energetic and spiritual level, we already have everything we want within. Every goal, object, or event has an energy pattern to it. This pattern can be accessed internally. Everything is energy. Part of us knows this and we can use our power to activate this knowing inside.
Yes, we all have things we want on an outer level. I do too. Better jobs, new cars, money, loving partners, etc. Maybe we have even practiced Law of Attraction and had some degree of success getting things we want. I have too. However, it is important to remind ourselves often that the deepest fulfillment is always available from within.
I recently had the experience of getting a great email from someone. He liked something I had written and gave me a heartfelt compliment about it. I felt good reading his kind message, but it was different than an ego kind of good. Instead of feeling good inside because of the approval factor, something different happened for me. I suddenly felt a beautiful energy or spiritual light in my body. I literally ‘expanded outside of the desire for approval,’ and suddenly felt deeper joy that comes from being of service. I had really helped this person, and I realized it was not approval from him I wanted at all, but that I had a soul desire to be of service. That is where my real joy came from.
There is almost always a deeper desire underneath our “surface desires.” This deeper desire could be called Essence. Rather than me defining Essence further, let’s go into it experientially.
Now, come back to the one thing (an event or object) you want. Put your attention on it. Let yourself want it for a moment. Say to yourself: “I want such and such…”
Just feel and sit with the energy of wanting. Gently enter into that wanting, like you are wading into a river. Get curious about what is in the depths of this river of wanting.
Keep going deeper. Ask another question: “What do I think having this thing or event will bring me?” Keep exploring. You may still want what you want on the outside, but see if there is a deeper want underneath. Continue uncover layers of wants, by asking “What will having such and such do for me?” “What is my deeper desire?”
Take a few slow, deep breaths when you’re done.
It is important to go after what we want in our lives. Action + Pure Intention creates results. But, and this is the key, don’t confuse getting what you want with the fulfillment that comes from being who you are. Being who you are is being Essence.
What is Essence? It’s the final layer of the onion that is reached when we peel away our goals. It is the core, the quintessential quality behind all outer desires.
Reflect on the following examples and see if they are a fit in any areas of your life:
You want more travel?…the essence you want is freedom.
Want chocolate? The essence you crave is the sweetness of ALIVENESS itself.
Want a relationship? The essence is LOVE…
Want approval? The essence you want is to be truly seen or to be of service.
Want money? The essence is gratitude for outer realities.
Want health? The essence is survivorship or strength.
These are meant as pointers to help you find your own unique, deeper Essence qualities.
Going for Essence is an attitude. It’s the key to non-attachment as you pursue material goals. There is no lack when we go for True Essence. Tune into ESSENCE. Breath it; be it; feel it. Where is it? Not out there, but inside. It is a feeling of Energy, Aliveness, and Light.
Go for essence first. Whenever you have an outer desire, consciously remind yourself there is another reality, a deeper desire under that one available now.
When you make Essence your first focus, you may find out that creating what you want on the outside becomes easier. Ultimately, you will find connecting with, or merging into Essence IS the letting go of the idea that you don’t already have what you want. And when that happens, you can smile inside at having gotten the cosmic joke: You are what you are looking for; there is nowhere to go but here in your heart.

Michael, I really like how you describe digging to find the real essence of what it is that we desire. That is powerful stuff… For me, I was really afraid to uncover these “essences” within me because I had formed a belief about myself that I was fundamentally messed up, at the core of who I was. The more I embraced the truth about the actual goodness of my own heart, the more I was able to celebrate and pursue my deepest desires. Thanks for your eloquence and insight.

Great advice! Loyalty shouldn’t be underestimated. Too often, it’s taken for granted. In the long run, hard work doesn’t go unrewarded.
