by Daniel K Foisy…
The greatest gift I can give myself is to be who I really am, and share that with others. By opening up my heart and putting my fears aside, I permit others to open up and do the same. We shed our egos and share our inner light.
It wasn’t always like this for me. Like most of us, I have been conditioned to keep everything in. I have been taught from an early age that my thoughts, beliefs and actions should fit within collective guidelines. What I feel, think and dream has no value unless it is within the parameters of the group consciousness. Being of the male gender, under no circumstances should I share or show my feelings. This is a sign of weakness.
Or so I thought. In reality, by not opening up and sharing with others who I truly am, I coward out in fear of what others may think. By keeping to myself, others don’t know what to make of me, so they create their own perspective of who they think I am with what I’ve given them to work with, which is not much. Basically I just created what I feared the most. How interesting!
The day I became courageous enough to open up, all my relationships started to change. I noticed some people didn’t know how to take me. I wasn’t the same person they thought I was. I, in turn, came to realize that I did not know them either.
Conversations became much deeper. The sharing and opening of my heart created a shift in the quality of questions and answers within me. I realized that by opening myself up, and I permitted others to do the same. My friends started confiding in me and sharing things with me that I could never imagine hearing from someone else. I likewise felt free to share some of my most intimate thoughts and feelings with others, without feeling threatened or judged.
The difference was huge; the process was simple. We were shedding our layers of ego protection and showing one another our inner light – our greatest gift.
