Noise from traffic, your neighbors, or even your family can raise your stress level. Most of us don’t have the luxury of being able to jump on a plane and fly off to a deserted beach to find some peace and quiet. Luckily, there are some things you can do to cut down noise and give yourself some peace.
One of the easiest things you can do to cut down on noise is to buy a set of ear plugs. You can find these in just about any drug store. The kind you want to get is the squishy foam kind. You roll these up into a twist and insert them into your ear. Once inside, they unroll and fill up your outer ear canal, blocking out sound. The only drawback is that with time, they get coated with ear wax and you have to throw them out. Luckily, they are pretty inexpensive.
Another thing you can do is to create white noise. You can find white noise generators that run on your computer by searching online. Another way is to buy a CD or MP3 that has white noise recorded on it. These recordings are often made with the sound of rain, a waterfall, or the ocean, so they are even more soothing. An even simpler way is to turn on a fan. While not exactly white noise, it has a similar effect. My wife and I used this technique last summer to drown out the noise of our neighbor’s late night party.
A high-tech technique to create silence is to use a set of noise cancelling headphones. These use the principle of anti-noise to create silence. What this means is that the headphones create a noise that is 180 degrees out of phase with the noises in the outside environment. This has the effect of cancelling out the original noise. Noise-cancelling headphones work best on low frequency noises, regular noises, like the sound of airplane engines. They don’t work as well on things like conversations, unless you are playing music at the same time.
For the ultimate in noise reduction, try combining all three of these techniques. The combination of ear plugs and a set of noise cancelling headphones playing white noise layered with ocean sounds can leave you feeling tranquil indeed.
