GOAL-SETTING TIP #1… NOT BINARY

100326_goals

You must never write goals in the binary way, meaning that the only options are success or failure. Practically every person makes this mistake. People write a goal to achieve a certain outcome. If they achieve it, then they feel good. If they do not achieve it, they feel bad.

This is very harmful. Why? Let me give you an example. If you ask a child to put out his hand and the child does and you give that child a candy, the child is happy. If you ask again and give the child another candy, the child is of course happy again. You can do this 9 times and the child will comply each time. Then, on the tenth time, when the child puts out his hand, let’s say you slap his hand with a ruler. Let’s review, the child got positive feedback 9 times and got hurt only once. When you then ask the child to put out his hand the eleventh time, the child will likely hesitate then refuse, fearing the negative outcome. It is the same with goals written in the binary way. You may write 9 goals and achieve them all. But, when you record your tenth goal and fail, you will, like that child, hesitate and possibly refuse to write goals ever again.

GOAL-SETTING TIP #2… MTO(TM)

I have created and teach the revolutionary MTO(TM) Technique for recording goals. MTO(TM) stands for “Minimum, Target, Outrageous”. Every time you record a goal, you record three different MTO(TM) levels of that goal. Minimum is defined as ‘what you can be counted on to do based on your past performance’. Target is defined as the stretch. Outrageous is defined as what you are sure you cannot achieve. Let me give you an example. If someone in business who usually makes about 5 sales a month wanted to increase his success, he might unfortunately record a goal as follows: “I will make 8 sales this month.” If he makes 8 or more sales, he feels great. If he does not, he feels terrible and may begin to think of himself as a failure. If one of my mentored clients wanted to record a such a goal, it would look like this:

This month, I will achieve MINIMUM 5 sales, TARGET 8 sales, OUTRAGEOUS 10 sales.

He will very likely hit his Minimum and have thereby achieved his goal, at least to the Minimum level. He feels good. He has success. Also, if there are some days left in the month, he can still aim for Target or Outrageous. Every goal ends with a success.

GOAL-SETTING TIP #3… DELEGATION

Think of some task you do every morning. Maybe it’s brushing your teeth. Would you write a goal to brush your teeth every morning? Of course not. Why? Because you are already good at it. By extension, you therefore select as you goals only those tasks that you are NOT good at. Maybe you have always wanted to stretch every morning, or pray, or jog, or read, or meditate, or exercise. If you are not good at doing these tasks, then these are the tasks you would write goals about. So, we have just learned that you select as goals only those tasks you are not good at completing. How, then, can you have lots of success achieving goals when you select goals that you are not good at achieving? The answer is Delegation. Delegation is asking a person or company to do all or part of the goal for you or with you. There is someone who can effortlessly do what you struggle to do. Ask that person for help in achieving your goal. In reciprocation, that person may wish to be paid. However, there are many delegations which do not involved money. A fellow employee may be willing to swap some tasks with you so that you do what that fellow employee dislikes and that employee does what you dislike.

GOAL-SETTING TIP #4… THE FIRST STEP

In my research, I have found that people who fail at achieving a goal actually don’t even start at it. Just starting, in some tiny way, is sometimes all that is needed in order to achieve the goal. So, my mentored students are instructed to record a First Step which must be doable in no more than a few minutes. If you want to read a book and you have procrastinated getting started, then the First Step might be to find the book, or to move the book from the shelf to your desk, or to open the cover, or to read the first paragraph. Just a small step. But, it gets you started. It primes the pump. It breaks the seal. It greases the wheel. It gets the balls rolling.

GOAL-SETTING TIP #5… NEATLY

I cannot prove this, but my quarter-century of experience in mentoring people to success through goal-setting and goal-achievement has taught me that recording goals neatly is very important. Scribbling a goal or writing sloppily is a huge hindrance to its accomplishment. It is as if the Universe knows that recording a goal sloppily shows that you are not taking the goal seriously so the Universe does not help you achieve it. Also, on the same topic, writing a goal on a clean piece of paper and storing it in a special place are also important because those actions give extra attention and energy to your goals.
