Eye contact, a physical gesture, indeed works best, especially when you want to connect with people emotionally, be they your near and dear ones or an audience. You share greater intimacy with the front person, the longer you maintain eye contact with him/her. While addressing people, the key is to look straight into their eyes.

First impressions always mean much and you impress people through maintaining visual contact only. It helps you relate well with the society. Suffice it to say, visual contact is a non-verbal means of communication and sharing ideas, which largely influences a person’s social behavior.

How to Maintain Eye Contact:

1. While talking to a new person, always appear willing and confident to look at the person directly in the eyes, as it conveys the message that you are comfortable talking. This will help you maintain visual contact.

2. Listen carefully to people around you. Stay attentive to what they say and share your thoughts with them accordingly. By showing interest in them and their conversation, you might be able to maintain good visual contact all through the entire conversation.

3. Maintaining eye contact does not mean constantly staring at others’ eyes. It is actually an art, through which you make your opponents believe that you are all ears to their opinions and feelings over some discussion. Hence, stay ears to maintain eye contact.

4. When seated in the boardroom, involve others sitting around you once the business meeting has begun. Here, attend to each speaker with a positive attitude and good eye contact. In addition, appear sensitive to people with diverse cultures.

5. Draw visual contact after you pass a direct conversation and engage later. This is because the other person might seem uncomfortable looking straight into your eyes for a long time.

6. To maintain visual contact, complete your conversation with one person first before you move on to the other.
