Eckhart Tolle created a massive ripple when he came out with his book The Power of Now. It supported a massive shift into deeper awareness of who we really are, what is real, and what is simply illusion.

The purpose of this article is to explore further the power of now, what it means, and what Eckhart Tolle was tapping into.

The rabbit hole is much deeper than most people realize.

A wise man once said that if you can perceive anything, then that in itself means you are not what you perceive. Many of you know that I say “Perception is Projection” a lot. However, what we are pointing to here goes even deeper than this.

Perception is projection when it comes from your Internal Map of Reality (which is just about everything).

However, WHAT is perceiving this in the first place?

What was here PRIOR to this thought? Where does NOW come from?

You see, this is where mind technologies STOP, and spiritual technologies step in.

In all the wisdom schools there is an understanding that YOU, who you really are, are MORE than your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and associations. In fact, when you step back enough, you’ll find that all of this (thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and associations) are occurring in the space of YOU.

It all arises and takes up space. Just look around you.

All of this is arising within YOU…In the space of NOW.

If YOU are not here, could THIS be here? Kind of a funny question…Here we are contemplating what the wisdom traditions have called “Nothingness”, “The Void”, “Endlessness”, “Infinite”, “Presence” and so on.

If you are NOT your perceptions (because you can SEE your perceptions) WHO ARE YOU?

Words in this case only POINT in a direction. We cannot GRASP this as an idea. We REALIZE this.

So often, in the Self-Development/Improvement world, people are told to improve themselves. What’s really going on is not self-improvement…but EGO improvement. Now, listen closely…

…This is ALSO important. It’s important to have a healthy functioning EGO. It’s a tool to use.

And since its origin is in the mind, like the mind, it is a poor master.

When we realize who we are NOT, we begin to open the doors to who we ARE.

Are you this personality? Are you your insecurities? Are you your bad memories?

See, when most people ask this question “Who am I?” what they are really asking is:

“Who do I BELIEVE I am?”

This is great to be aware of your Self-Image. You can change Self-Image. And this will change your behaviors and everything else. This in turn makes your life less painful, more pleasant, and less stressful.

However, what we are asking is: “Who am I?” from a place of Non-Identity.

Again, if you are NOT a thought…WHO ARE YOU?

As you may very well notice…if you answered ANYTHING AT ALL…You’re not that.
