Why do I let my ego torment me so? Is it not all in vain? Everything I am building and saving will I not eventually lose?
We live as if we are never going to die. Perhaps deep down we believe it to be true. And in a sense it is. That part of us which is eternal, indestructible and omnipotent will never die. But the part of us that we see everyday, the part of us that we give the most attention to, the part of us that wants to be correct. That part of us is going to die.
There is a part of us that looks to others for approval. There is a part of us that looks to others for definition. There is a part of us that needs to win. There is a part of us that hates to lose. There is a part of us that must be just as good if not better than everyone else.
That is the part of us that is always comparing itself to others. It tries to determine if we make the grade to see if we are living up to the expectations that were thrust on us.
Can we not see that all of these expectations are in vain?
But where did these expectations come from? They came from the ego driven world form which we must escape. So they are false creations. We can’t play the game made up of rules written by ego dominated minds. We can not win. You can’t win the game when you competitor can make up the rules as you go along.
There can be no satisfaction. The more we try to satisfy an unquenchable appetite the hungrier it will become. We must learn not to feed the ego.
We have to learn that we are not depriving ourselves, our true selves. We are preparing for a better way of living. We are opening the doors to a new way of seeing things and a life of infinite possibilities.
We can not give the ego nourishment. We can not give it what it wants. By giving the ego what it wants it will only become stronger and it will be harder for us to relinquish ourselves form its hold.
But it is hard not to feed the ego. Just try and deprive yourself from food and see what happens. Your body will cry out for food. You will soon find yourself overwhelmed by the desire to eat. So too will it be with the ego. The ego will cry to be fed. But like one on a diet you must resist.
The ego can be tamed. Just like one on a food diet can learn to control their appetite.
Just like one going on a diet would not want to completely starve themselves to death. Neither would we completely want to starve our ego either. Our ego can serve its purpose. It too can show us how to survive. It can even make life fun. But we have to make sure the ego knows it is not in control, that you will not pamper its every whim and desire. The ego is like a little child, who thinks it is looking out for its best interest but is actually doing itself harm.
Until you learn to tame the ego you will always be doing yourself more harm than good.
Give your ego no more credit than you would the ignorance of a little child. For the ego does not understand. Look at your ego through the eyes of a caring observer. Don’t become angry at your ego, no more than you would become angry at a little child that is about to put its hand into a fire. Just make the necessary corrections to prevent the future error in judgment and negative circumstances.
Become the concerned guide for your ego. Just as a child left alone without guidance is soon to find itself in dangerous circumstances, so too is the ego without direction.
You are separate from your ego and you are in control. Never doubt that for a moment. You always have the option to tell your ego NO. And the funny thing is once you learn that you are the master of your ego. You will find that at times you can also tell it YES.
