Today, I am happy to interview Patrick Ryan, author of Awakened Wisdom: A Guide to Reclaiming Your Brilliance. This is the 13th stop on Patrick’s 14-day Virtual Blog Tour to promote the launch of his new book this coming Tuesday.
Arlene: Your book is subtitled Reclaiming Your Brilliance. How do we do that?
Patrick: Inherent within each of us is our own unique brilliance. When we are connected to our brilliance we are inspired and able to move forward in a good way according to our own wisdom. I call this living from our Divine Essence. When we live from our Divine Essence we are moving each day according to what is needed to create and sustain a great and extraordinary presence in life.
On the other side of our being we have a Distorted Self. That is an aspect of who we are that will use fear, doubt, judgment and other various energies to keep us from living a vibrant life. Our Distorted Self puts all these energies out in front of us so that our life will stay the same. Distorted generally dislikes change and of course life is always going to change so Distorted keeps very busy until we learn how to manage this energy.
Each of us can learn how to do this by activating our Divine Essence more fully. The first step is always to notice when Divine Essence is present or not. If Divine Essence is not present then we may choose to activate it and bring it forward.
In my book, I discuss many ways to do this. One way that I have found to be very effective is to connect with nature, perhaps by going for a walk. As you do walk it can be very helpful to hold a resourceful and inspiring question such as, what is needed to solve this dilemma that I am experiencing in my life in a good way? As you walk with a question like that it is then important to notice any ideas that occur to you.
Arlene: You talk in your book about the 8 states of an awakened life. Could you elaborate on what each of these is and how each contributes to the whole?
Patrick: The Eight States of an Awakened Life taken together are a complete guide to consider what is needed to live an awakened life. That is a life in which we are living consciously and responsibly according to each of our own wisdoms. I really believe that when each of us is connected to our own brilliance then we naturally make good choices as we move along our path.
The eight states are also a guide to creating our dreams. They provide a very powerful framework for considering what is needed to have an extraordinary life.
The eight states are a Good State of Intention, Words, Being, Purpose, Effort, Practice, Doing and Understanding. They will provide ideas and inspiration that cover the wholeness of life.
Arlene: One of your chapter headings is “When life is messy, something good is trying to happen.” Could you elaborate on this?
Patrick: Yes. Old things are going to fall apart. We all have those times in our life when things seem to be breaking down or falling away. It may look like being in conflict with colleagues, friends, or family or perhaps our relationships, job or business is unraveling and it seems that nothing is working out. Every life will have these moments; messy moments.
It is in these moments that we really meet our Self. We discover our edges with regards to dealing with the relationships and situations in our life that are demanding something from us.
Often the more we try to hold on to the way things are then the more those things shake apart. It can seem counter intuitive during those times to take your hand off of the wheel and allow the process to go in the direction that it needs to. There is little or nothing in life that we can control. Thinking that we are controlling anything is one of the biggest illusions in life. At best we can influence and always we can navigate according to the wisdom of our Divine Essence.
Often when you are in a storm the wisest course is to go with it. It may take you off of the course you thought you would be on but from the point of view of life itself it is more likely that the wind is carrying you more swiftly to the best place that you never could have imagined. I have found that no matter how much I could picture what I thought I wanted in fact looking back on it I found that where I was headed was so much bigger and more amazing then I pictured.
When we begin to see change and chaos as friendly and creative forces in our life then life becomes a big adventure and each day holds so many opportunities.
In the book Awakened Wisdom I am presenting a way to embrace the most amazing possibilities of who we really are and where we can go from here.
Journey well,
Patrick Ryan
